Top 5 self care tips: December 2020
It's the silly season and everyone I speak to is exhausted and focused on a finish line, whether that's school finishing, holidays or Christmas, so it's more important than ever to find a few moments for self care.
Tip 1: Remember to breathe
Just a few minutes of 'me time' can help so take the time to pause and enjoy a nice cup of tea of coffee, or take a few deep breaths, in and out. I find singing along very loudly to my favourite tune in the car (when I'm on my own) helps too!
Tip 2: Donate your time
I appreciate this is difficult at this time of year, however volunteering is shown to reduce loneliness and raise self-esteem. Whether it's for the school, for a charity packing Christmas hampers or a work activity, consider how you can help.
Tip 3: Podcasts
Podcasts are a great way to learn new things, be inspired and wind down and can make doing household chores less of a grind. I really enjoy the Too Peas podcast, Chat10Looks3 and if you like true crime Unravel.
Tip 4: Get sweaty
Exercise is essential to your mental health, and helps with symptoms of depression and anxiety. So don't forget to get sweaty, whether it's walking the dog, playing your favourite sport or a workout in your living room.
Tip 5: JOMO (joy of missing out)
Embrace JOMO. Remember that you don't have to say 'yes' to everything, particularly at this time of year. And don't get stressed if your friends catch up without you ... there will be other times.
